INTRODUCTION
Dhaka Polytechnic Institute is the oldest Polytechnic Institute in Bangladesh. It was established in 1955 with only 120 students in the first year classes of Diploma-In-Engineering in four technologies, namely, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and power with the growing demands of mid-level technical manpower home and abroad the Institute has since greatly expended. The Institute now offers courses in Eleven technologies.
LOCATION
The Institute is located at Tejgon Industrial Area about four kilometers from the of the city (towards north) and on the east side of Dhaka–tongi highway about 100 meters north of is intersection, satrasta. It how over covers an area of about 27 acres of land.
OPERATION
1. Dhaka Polytechnic Institue operates under the executive control of the Ministry of Education, Goverment of the people's Republic of Bangladesh acting through the Directorate of Technical Education. The academic programes, howeve, function under the regulation of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board(BTEB), Agargaon, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Dhaka-1215.
The courses are of 4-years duration divided into eight semesters. Including "Industrial Attachment Traning" of one semester (six month) duration in different industrial oraganigation. Successful completion of the courses including "Industrial Attachment Traning" as per BTEB-regulations entitles a student to the award of Diploma-in-Engineering in his technology.Since 1994-95 Diploma-in-Engineering courses operate in two shift. The first shift operates from 8:00 am to1:50pm, while the 2nd one from 11:20am to 5:40pm. The prerequisite for admission in first year semester class is Secondary School Certificate(SSC) or its equivalent with at least GPA-2 marks in average and minimum of 40% marks in mathematics. Both male and female candidates are eligible for admission
Short Courses:
In addition to Diploma-in-Engineering courses, the Institute is now conducting BTEB affiliated "Basic Trade Course" in Television & radio servicing, Computer operator, House wiring, Electisian, Welding, Building & Architectural Drafting with Auto-CAD, Food Processing &Preservation, Refrigeration & Airconditioning, Auto Mecanics, Surveyor, Building Maintainandce, Masonary & Rod binding, Plumbing & pipe fitting, Furniture & Cabinet Making.The Institute has also provision for basic trede courses in Advance Electrical repair & maintainance, General Mechanics, Turner etc.
Collaborative Programmes:
The Institute provides collaborative services to other Institute in conducting their academic courses both in theory and practical. At present practical classes of Civil, Electrical & Electronics and Computer Technologies of Dip-in Engg. Programme of Ashanulla University of Sciences and Technology(AUST). Sometimes the Military courses are conducted in the Institute.
